Defining Boxing
Stance.

A
boxers stance in boxing is one of the
most important elements for
boxers. With stance correctly or
incorrectly tailored to the individual
concerned, will make or break the
potential of any boxer or individuals
beginning
boxing.
The
stance meaning: how the boxer stands when
in position boxing. Both in attacking and
defending the stance is key to having any
success in either
area.
If
positioning is incorrect effectiveness of
punches is lost regardless of how open
the opponents defence is. Power behind
punches will be minimal, delivery of the
blows none effective having least
likelihood of bodyweight momentum, behind
each
punch.
Over
or under balanced at point of combination
delivery shall drastically reduce
effectiveness, resulting in confidence
devastation. Not then able to plan
coherent strategy without doubt or
negativity, leaving panic to take control
at the very point of strategy
requirement. Throwing caution to the
winds as it were, so attacking with least
control of movement or
punching.
Throwing
multi handed attacks at the opponent,
punches which will mainly miss with the
potential of one or two landing on target
by chance, ruling all fight actions. Like
a whirlwind of wildly swinging arms and
gloves, which cannot guard against
counter punching at the same time. That
also leaves the body open to stamina
failure at a rate so fast, resulting in
mild trauma to
experience.
Without stamina all plans fail
period!
When
regarding applying stance for the first
time there are a number of considerations
to take into
account.
Whether the individual is
left or right handed both in hands and feet.
This point may be hard to believe some are
right handed but left footed and so
on.
The simplest way to
determine is for the individual to attempt to
box, as they are aware of boxing. So then
assessing where strengths are if say for this
explanation right handed, it is likely the
stronger arm is in fact the right
arm.
The stronger arm always
becomes the cross punch, which is rule of
thumb. By attempting to stand leading with the
left hand as the jab punch and the right the
cross punch. Using that positioning for the
feet at the same time. Left foot leading and
right foot behind, feet pointing angled 45
degrees from facing. While up on the balls of
the feet just an inch or so from the
floor.
It is possible to realise the
stronger punch stance by having the individual
attempt punching from the basic stance just
described, which is an orthodox stance where
the right hand carried the power in the cross
punch and leads with jabs punching using the
left hand. By switching the individual will
sense the most powerful and comfortable
stance.
While viewing in action the
trainer can sum up the potential so decide
which stance foundation of boxing is apparent,
whether orthodox leading with the left or
southpaw leading with the right hand. In many
cases the stance is determined by the speed and
power of punch available, when the individual
is then demonstrating the two opposite basic
stance positions.
In some cases feet
positioning when in stance may be opposite to
the hands. Naturally right footed and left
handed being the outcome or the opposite left
footed and right handed. By testing the
individual on either stance the outcome will be
seen quite easily which stance throws the best
punches. So making the determination to which
stance basically suits whether southpaw or
orthodox.
A balance between mobility
and punch ability must be determined. Where the
feet are in fact right to left handed or vice
versa, if good mobility over punching
capability then better to go with mobility and
work on punch capabilities. If how ever
punching excels over mobility then again go for
that pattern if the individual is comfortable
and feels well balanced.
Quite often boxers can have a
very strong jab punch over the cross punch
which comes as a result of being opposite in
left or right handed over left or right footed,
in many cases. Where stance was decided better
suited for the mobility option over punch
ability. It is possible punch capabilities were
good to begin with and mobility improved over
the opposite stance.
The ruling action over all is
to present a boxer with least target area
showing, able to punch at anytime. Capable of
good mobility of movement at pace, where
punching can be delivered from any position at
any requirement maintaining balance and control
of actions and counter
actions.
